Parma Calcio 1990/92 Home (Medium)

Before Parma became one of the most famous Italian teams of the 1990s, they had never even played in Serie A.

That changed in 1990. Nevio Scala had guided Parma to promotion at the end of 1989/90, sending the club into Italy’s top division for the first time in its history. Rather than simply trying to survive, Parma strengthened the squad with players including Brazilian World Cup goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel, Swedish star Tomas Brolin and Belgian defender Georges Grün. 

And then came one of the best debut seasons imaginable. Wearing this white Umbro shirt with its unmistakable yellow-and-blue sleeves, Parma finished sixth in Serie A in 1990/91. They ended above Juventus and Napoli and immediately qualified for the UEFA Cup. Parma’s own historical archive even highlights a 2-0 home victory over Milan as one of the landmark results of that first campaign. 

Umbro kept the same home design for 1991/92 and that is when the story became even bigger.

Parma reached the Coppa Italia final against Juventus. The first leg in Turin ended badly: Roberto Baggio scored from the penalty spot and Juventus won 1-0. 

The second leg was played at the Stadio Tardini on 14 May 1992. Just before half-time, Alessandro Melli scored to wipe out Juventus’ advantage. Then Marco Osio made it 2-0 in the second half. Parma held on and won the cup 2-1 on aggregate. 

It was the first major trophy Parma had ever won. 

And it opened the floodgates. The victory put Parma into the following season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup, which they won in 1993. A UEFA Cup followed in 1995, then more domestic and European trophies as Parma became one of the defining teams of 1990s Italian football. 

So this two-season shirt captures Parma before and after the breakthrough: they first wore it as a club that had never played Serie A football and by the time they stopped wearing it, they were major trophy winners heading into Europe.
