When Nigeria Turned Ankara Prints Into Footballwear

After Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup collection became a global phenomenon, Nike didn’t simply repeat it. For 2020, the brand built an entire Naija collection around Nigerian visual culture, giving different pieces their own links to traditional art, clothing and craft.

This pre-match shirt was part of that approach. Nike drew inspiration for the wider apparel range from Ankara fabrics, known for bold all-over prints, while this warm-up top used a dense Nigerian-inspired foliage graphic with “NAIJA” across the front.

The collection had a ridiculous act to follow: Nigeria’s 2018 shirt had reportedly attracted around three million pre-orders and sold out almost immediately after release. Instead of toning things down, Nike doubled down on the idea that Nigeria footballwear could work just as well as fashion off the pitch.
