Nike turned Manchester’s industrial history into the main feature of this 2013/14 away shirt, covering it in oversized black and midnight-navy gingham checks inspired by the city’s old cotton mills. The concept was actually carried over from United’s controversial 2012/13 home shirt, but made larger and darker for the following season. Rooney wore No.10 in the design during the first campaign after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, including the 2-1 comeback at Sunderland when 18-year-old Adnan Januzaj scored twice on his first Premier League start.

Manchester’s Cotton-Mill Gingham, Reworked in Navy

Nike’s 2013/14 away shirt was built around Manchester itself. The huge black-and-midnight-navy checks referenced the gingham once produced in the city’s booming 18th-century cotton mills, continuing the industrial theme Nike had introduced on United’s previous home shirt. This time, the checks were deliberately made much bigger and bolder.

The shirt was unveiled at Osaka Castle during United’s pre-season tour of Japan, only weeks after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. That timing gave it another identity: this became the away shirt of United’s first season without Ferguson in 26 years, with David Moyes taking over the defending Premier League champions.

One of its most memorable outings came at Sunderland in October 2013. Wayne Rooney started in No.10 as United fell behind after five minutes, before Adnan Januzaj scored twice on his first Premier League start to turn the game into a 2-1 victory.

For collectors, the design is the real hook. Nike took a pattern that had divided opinion on the previous season’s home shirt and doubled down on it, turning the gingham into one of United’s boldest modern away kits: a shirt directly tied to Manchester’s textile history and to the club’s difficult first season after Ferguson.
