This Nike Total 90 training shirt comes from the final Manchester United season with Vodafone across the chest. In November 2005, Vodafone and United announced that their £9 million-a-year sponsorship would end after 2005/06: two years earlier than originally planned. The season also became a changing-of-the-guard year at Old Trafford, with Roy Keane leaving after more than 12 years before Rooney and Ronaldo helped United finish the campaign by winning the League Cup.

The Last Vodafone Training Shirt

This blue Nike shirt belongs to United’s Total 90 training range from 2005/06, complete with the oversized tonal “90” graphic across the back and Vodafone branding on the chest.

What makes the Vodafone logo particularly significant is that this was its last season on Manchester United clothing. Vodafone had sponsored United since 2000, but in November 2005 the company unexpectedly announced that the agreement would finish at the end of the season, cutting the deal short by two years. It then shifted its football sponsorship towards the UEFA Champions League.

The announcement came during a turbulent few weeks. Just days earlier, captain Roy Keane had left the club with immediate effect after more than 12 years, ending one of the defining United careers of the Ferguson era. The squad was increasingly being reshaped around younger players including Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

United did at least finish the season with silverware. Rooney scored twice and Ronaldo once as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Wigan 4-0 in the 2006 League Cup final. So this training shirt comes from a genuine transition point: the last Vodafone season, the end of the Keane era and the period when Rooney and Ronaldo were beginning to become the centre of the next Manchester United team.
