Manchester United wore this Umbro home shirt throughout the historic 1998/99 Treble season and it was the design used when the first two trophies were secured. On the final day of the Premier League season, United came from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1 at Old Trafford, with David Beckham equalising and Andy Cole scoring the title-winning goal. Six days later, the same home design appeared at Wembley as Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes scored in a 2-0 FA Cup Final win over Newcastle

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt That Won the First Two Parts of the Treble

Umbro introduced this Manchester United home shirt for 1998/99 and kept it for 1999/00. Its white collar, black zip and black-and-white diamond taping along the shoulders made it one of the most recognisable United designs of the late 1990s, while Sharp appeared on a United home shirt for the final time during this two-season cycle.

Its defining season was obviously 1998/99. United reached the final day of the Premier League still needing to beat Tottenham to guarantee the title. Spurs scored first, but David Beckham equalised before half-time and substitute Andy Cole lobbed the winner, sealing the first trophy of what was about to become an unprecedented Treble.

Only six days later, United wore this design again in the FA Cup Final against Newcastle. Teddy Sheringham came on early for the injured Roy Keane and scored almost immediately, before Paul Scholes made it 2-0. That completed the second part of the Treble.

Umbro produced a separate European home design for the 1998/99 Champions League campaign and that was the red shirt worn against Bayern Munich in Barcelona. This version’s strongest claim is still massive on its own: it is the home shirt in which United clinched both the Premier League and FA Cup before completing the Treble in Europe four days later.
