Bruno Switched to No. 8 Then Lifted His First United Trophy

Bruno Fernandes had worn No. 18 since arriving at Manchester United in 2020, but in summer 2022 he finally switched to No. 8, the number he had previously worn at Sporting and Udinese. United even had Bruno explain how much the number meant to him when the change was announced.

He quickly made it feel like his shirt. Bruno finished 2022/23 as United’s leading assist provider for the third season running, setting up 13 goals across all competitions. The season also brought a long-awaited team reward: United beat Newcastle 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final, their first trophy since 2017.

Bruno was out there for the final and later lifted the trophy alongside Harry Maguire at Wembley. That’s what gives this shirt a nice place in his United story: first season as No. 8, first trophy with the club and the start of the number that has since become so closely linked with him.
