THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

City Debuted This Shirt in Sven’s First Game And Won 2-0

This shirt’s first competitive appearance came on 11 August 2007, the opening day of the Premier League season and Sven-Göran Eriksson’s first match as Manchester City manager. City had just rebuilt heavily in the summer and six starters (Kasper Schmeichel, Javier Garrido, Vedran Ćorluka, Martin Petrov, Elano and Rolando Bianchi) were making their league debuts for the club.

The new-look City took only 18 minutes to score. Elano drove forward and crossed for fellow new signing Bianchi to score on his debut, before substitute Geovanni (another debutant) made it 2-0 in the closing minutes.

So this white-and-sky-blue third shirt is tied directly to the first match of the Sven era: new manager, a stack of new players and an immediate away win. City themselves later remembered the game as the beginning of Sven’s “rollercoaster” one-season spell in Manchester.
