The 2009/10 home shirt is easy to recognise because of the big black chevron, but it also marks the end of something. It was United’s last home kit with AIG on the front, closing the sponsor era that had covered the club’s 2008 Champions League win and three straight Premier League titles.

Rio Ferdinand’s No. 5 fits that era perfectly. He had already been one of the main defenders behind United’s run of domestic and European success and although injuries limited him during 2009/10, the shirt still belongs to a side that pushed Chelsea to the final day of the title race and retained the League Cup.
