Liverpool and New Balance said the flashes were strategically placed for easier identification at rapid speed. THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Yellow Details Were Designed to Be Seen at Speed

New Balance gave Liverpool’s 2016/17 home kit an unusual piece of performance thinking. The amber-yellow flashes were described as “cognitive recognition” details, positioned so elements of the kit could be identified more easily at speed rather than simply serving as decoration.

There was also something hidden inside the shirt. As part of New Balance’s Made for Liverpool campaign, the inner hem carried the words “There’s no noise like the Anfield noise”, a famous quote from former Liverpool striker Ian St John celebrating the atmosphere at Anfield.

The shirt became associated with Jürgen Klopp’s first full season in charge. Liverpool finished fourth with 76 points, securing a Champions League qualification place and beginning the return to Europe that would define the next stage of Klopp’s era.
