In 2001 alone, Gérard Houllier’s side won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup, then added the Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup: five trophies in the space of six months. The UEFA Cup final was the wildest of them all: Liverpool beat Alavés 5-4 after extra time, with the winner arriving as a golden-goal own goal in the 117th minute. This Reebok training top belongs right to that strange little era when Liverpool seemed to finish every other week with another trophy.

The famous story is that Liverpool won a cup treble in 2000/01. The less obvious part is that they kept going until the number reached five.

It began with the League Cup against Birmingham in February 2001. Then came one of Liverpool’s most dramatic FA Cup wins: Arsenal dominated much of the final, but Michael Owen scored twice late on to turn the game around. Just four days later, Liverpool were in Dortmund for an even crazier final, beating Alavés 5-4 after extra time to win the UEFA Cup.

The following season began with the same Liverpool squad adding another two trophies. Manchester United were beaten 2-1 in the Charity Shield and European champions Bayern Munich were then defeated 3-2 in the UEFA Super Cup. By the end of 2001, Liverpool had collected five trophies in a single calendar year.

That is what makes this 2000/02 training piece more interesting than a normal piece of Reebok teamwear. It belongs to the exact two-season period when Liverpool suddenly became serial cup winners again, a team that started 2001 chasing one trophy and finished it posing with five.
