This clean sponsorless front was not just a retro design choice. Leeds entered 2015/16 still locked in a legal dispute with previous front sponsor Enterprise Insurance, whose agreement was supposed to run until 2016, so the company’s logo disappeared from the new Kappa shirts. The result was one of Leeds’ cleanest modern kits, created partly because the club was fighting the company that should have been printed across it.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Leeds Went Sponsorless Because They Were Fighting Their Own Shirt Sponsor

At first glance, this 2015/16 Leeds away shirt looks deliberately old-school: bright yellow, blue trim and almost nothing across the chest. But the blank front had a much messier story behind it.

Leeds had previously worn Enterprise Insurance as their main shirt sponsor and the agreement was meant to continue until 2016. By the time Kappa arrived for 2015/16, however, Leeds and Enterprise were involved in a legal dispute and Enterprise’s logo was absent from the new shirts. The club was simultaneously in a separate contractual fight with former kit supplier Macron, making the seemingly simple sponsorless shirt a product of one of the more chaotic periods behind the scenes at Elland Road.

Kappa’s first Leeds collection therefore ended up with an unusually clean look, while secondary sponsor Help-Link remained on the back. Even stranger, this yellow design lived on: it was later reused as a 2016/17 third shirt, with 32Red added to the front and Clipper covering the old Help-Link branding on the back.
