Adidas created this Japan home shirt around the concept “Nipponbare”, a perfectly clear Japanese sky, using five shades of blue in a chaotic “sky collage” inspired by traditional Japanese art. JFA unveiled it in November 2019 with Japan’s home Olympics in mind, only for Tokyo 2020 to be postponed by a full year. When the Games finally happened in 2021, Japan used an adapted Olympic version of the same design without the JFA crest or Adidas side stripes.

Nipponbare: The Shirt Designed for Japan’s Home Olympics

Adidas went unusually bold with Japan’s 2020 home shirt. Instead of a single Samurai Blue, the front was constructed from five different shades of blue in what JFA called a “sky collage”, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e art. The concept was named “Nipponbare”, representing different skies coming together into one clear Japanese sky.

It was unveiled in November 2019 with the major sporting events of 2020 in Japan firmly in mind. Then the entire context changed: the Tokyo Olympics were postponed because of the pandemic and eventually rescheduled for 23 July-8 August 2021. A shirt designed around optimism for 2020 therefore ended up spanning one of the strangest periods international football has experienced.

The design did eventually reach the Tokyo Olympics, but in altered form. Olympic regulations meant Japan’s tournament version removed the JFA badge and Adidas three stripes, making those shirts visually different from this standard national-team replica. That makes this the original full-federation version of a design created for a home Olympics that ended up taking place a year later.
