Japan’s 2020/21 away shirt was designed as the second half of Adidas’ “Nipponbare” (“clear Japanese sky”) concept. The subtle white-on-white graphic reused the “sky collage” pattern from the blue home shirt, but stripped it back to different shades of white to represent the clouds clearing into a hopeful sky. The shirt arrived in August 2020, during the pandemic disruption and was then worn as Japan’s senior men returned to international football after almost a year away.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt That Completed Japan’s “Nipponbare” Concept

When Adidas launched Japan’s new home shirt in late 2019, its design was built around the idea of “Nipponbare” or a perfectly clear Japanese sky. The blue shirt used five shades in a fractured “sky collage” inspired by Japanese art.

The white away shirt arrived later, in August 2020, to complete that idea. Adidas reused the same collage pattern but rendered it in different shades of white, representing individual skies and emotions coming together before opening into one clear, hopeful sky. It is subtle in photographs, but the pale pattern visible across this shirt is deliberate rather than a plain white finish.

Its timing also gave the design an unusual context. International football had been heavily disrupted by COVID-19 and Japan’s senior men did not play for almost a year. When they finally returned against Cameroon in October 2020, they did so in this white away design; a few days later they wore it again in a 1-0 win over Côte d’Ivoire, decided by Naomichi Ueda’s late goal.
