Five months before the 2006 World Cup, Francesco Totti suffered a broken leg and serious ankle-ligament damage, putting his place in Germany in doubt. He recovered in time, wore Italy’s No.10 in this Puma design and, in the Round of 16 against Australia, came off the bench to score a 95th-minute penalty that sent ten-man Italy into the quarter-finals. Italy eventually lifted the trophy, turning what had looked like a season-ending injury into the defining international tournament of Totti’s career.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Penalty Five Months After Totti Broke His Leg

When Totti was carried off against Empoli on 19 February 2006, his World Cup looked in serious danger. He had fractured his leg and damaged ankle ligaments. By late April he was only just returning to action, leaving very little time to reach full fitness before Germany.

Marcello Lippi still took him. Totti wore No.10 in Puma’s new blue home design, a shirt first introduced in March 2006 and used throughout Italy’s World Cup campaign. The three stars inside the FIGC crest on this example are an important detail: they date it to the version produced before Italy earned their fourth star in Germany

His defining moment came against Australia in the Round of 16. Italy had been reduced to ten men after Marco Materazzi’s red card and the match was still 0-0 deep into stoppage time when Fabio Grosso won a penalty. Totti, who had entered from the bench, stepped up in the 95th minute and scored, sending Italy through 1-0.

Italy went on to become world champions, with Totti appearing throughout the tournament despite still working his way back from that injury. For a Totti #10 shirt, that makes this design especially significant: it is the three-star Italy shirt he wore while completing an unlikely recovery and scoring the goal that kept the eventual champions alive.
