Italy Were Two Minutes From Elimination Before Baggio Saved Their World Cup

Italy's journey at the 1994 World Cup almost ended in the round of 16. Arrigo Sacchi's team were trailing Nigeria 1-0, Gianfranco Zola had been sent off and only minutes remained. Then Roberto Baggio scored in the 88th minute to force extra time. He converted a penalty in the 102nd minute to complete the comeback and send Italy into the quarter-finals.

Baggio followed that performance with the winning goal against Spain and two more against Bulgaria in the semi-final. Italy had reached the World Cup final despite a difficult group stage, extreme summer heat and several injury problems. Against Brazil at the Rose Bowl, Franco Baresi even returned to the starting lineup just 24 days after knee surgery.

The final finished 0-0 after extra time, becoming the first World Cup final ever decided by a penalty shootout. Italy lost 3-2, with Baggio's missed penalty becoming one of football's most famous images. Yet the tournament was about much more than that final moment: five Baggio goals, an extraordinary comeback and a team that came within one match of becoming world champions.
