Wirtz Needed Six Minutes to Get His First World Cup Assist

Florian Wirtz should have experienced his first World Cup four years earlier, but a serious ACL injury ruled him out of Qatar 2022. By 2026, he was Germany’s established No. 17 and finally arrived at his first World Cup as one of the team’s key creative players.

Germany opened the tournament against Curaçao in Houston wearing their 2026 home design. Wirtz wasted almost no time making an impact: in the sixth minute, he supplied the assist for Felix Nmecha to score Germany’s opening goal. Germany went on to win 7-1, their biggest victory of the tournament.

Wirtz remained involved throughout Germany’s short World Cup run, adding assists against Ecuador and Paraguay before Germany were eliminated on penalties in the Round of 32.
