Matthias Sammer wore Germany’s No.6 in this Adidas design during Euro 1996, where his performances from sweeper helped Germany win the tournament and earned him UEFA’s Player of the Tournament award. He scored twice despite playing at the back, including the winner against Croatia in the quarter-finals. By the end of 1996, Sammer had also won the Ballon d’Or, finishing just one point ahead of Ronaldo.

The No.6 Shirt Behind Sammer’s Ballon d’Or

Germany’s 1996 Adidas home shirt became closely associated with one of the most unusual stars of the tournament. Matthias Sammer wore No.6 as a libero, operating behind the midfield but constantly stepping forward into attacks in a role compared to Franz Beckenbauer.

He was far more than a defensive presence. Sammer scored against Russia in the group stage, then produced one of Germany’s decisive moments in the quarter-final against Croatia. With the score at 1-1, he moved into the box and finished the move that made it 2-1, sending Germany through to face England. UEFA named him Man of the Match.

Germany eventually won the final at Wembley against the Czech Republic through Oliver Bierhoff’s golden goal, with Sammer again starting in No.6. His overall tournament was strong enough for UEFA to name him Player of Euro 1996.

A few months later, Sammer won the 1996 Ballon d’Or, edging Ronaldo by 144 points to 143.
