THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Cross of Sant Jordi Shirt

This shirt represents Barcelona’s connection with the city and Catalonia. Nike replaced the traditional stripes with a large red-and-blue cross across a light-grey base.

The design was inspired by the Cross of Sant Jordi. Barcelona received the award in 1992 for its contribution to sport, civic life and society and the shirt marked the 30th anniversary.

The 2022–23 season was also Pedri’s first wearing Barcelona’s number 8. He had previously worn 16 before taking the number strongly associated with Andrés Iniesta.

Barcelona finished the season as La Liga champions, winning their first league title under Xavi. Pedri remained an important part of the midfield despite missing several matches through injury.

Its unusual cross design was used for only one season, while the Pedri 8 printing connects it to a major stage in his Barcelona career. That combination gives this version a much clearer identity than a standard unprinted third shirt.
