Lionel Messi reached 700 professional goals in this Barça home shirt and naturally he did it with a bit of style. Against Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou, he chipped a Panenka penalty down the middle for goal No. 700. For a Messi 10 from 2019/20, that’s a pretty good reason to want this one. It’s tied to one of those round-number milestones that instantly places the shirt in his career.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Messi Scored His 700th Career Goal in This Shirt With a Panenka

On 30 June 2020, Barcelona hosted Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou with Messi sitting on 699 professional goals. Early in the second half, Barça won a penalty and Messi stepped up wearing this checkerboard home design.

Instead of smashing it, he calmly lifted a Panenka into the middle of the goal. That made it 700 goals for club and country, with 630 of those for Barcelona and 70 for Argentina at the time.

The shirt already stands out because it was Barça’s first-ever checkerboard home design, but the Messi connection gives it much more than just a different look. It comes from the exact season where one of the biggest milestones of his career happened in this home kit, which makes a Messi 10 version especially nice to have.
