Piqué Joined La Masia at 10 Then Wore Its 40th-Anniversary Shirt

The diagonal sash on this shirt goes all the way back to 1979. Barcelona revived the old yellow away design in 2019 specifically because that was the year La Masia opened, turning the 2019/20 away kit into a 40th-anniversary tribute to the club’s academy.

And few names fit that story better than Gerard Piqué. He joined Barça’s youth structure at only 10, progressed through the academy until leaving for Manchester United in 2004, then returned to Barcelona four years later and became a first-team fixture. He once said that as a kid, his dream wasn’t simply to become a footballer, it was to become a Barça player.

By the start of this shirt’s season, that childhood dream had turned into something huge. On 25 August 2019, Piqué made his 500th competitive appearance for Barcelona. So the No. 3 on a shirt built to celebrate La Masia belongs to someone who entered that system as a child and, more than two decades later, had played 500 times for its first team.
