One of Messi’s best performances in this yellow away shirt came at Real Betis in February 2020. Barça won 3-2 and Messi assisted all three goals: for Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets and Clément Lenglet. For a Messi 10, that’s a great little detail: same away design, one match, three assists and he didn’t even need to score to completely decide the game.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Messi Got Three Assists in One Game Wearing This Away Shirt

Barcelona wore this yellow away kit at the Benito Villamarín on 9 February 2020 and Messi basically ran the whole match without getting on the scoresheet himself. Betis twice went ahead and twice Barça came back through chances created by Messi.

First, he clipped a perfect pass over the defence for Frenkie de Jong to equalise. Then his free-kick found Sergio Busquets for 2-2 just before half-time, before another set-piece delivery was headed in by Clément Lenglet for the winning goal. That gave Messi three assists in the same game, something he had only done three times previously in his career.

The shirt already has a strong identity because Nike designed it around La Masia’s 40th anniversary, but a Messi 10 version adds a proper match story to it. It’s one of those shirts that gets better once you know exactly what he did in it: three assists, away from home and directly involved in every Barça goal.
