Mascherano had played 319 games for Barcelona without scoring once when Barça won a penalty against Osasuna in April 2017. Ivan Rakitić handed him the ball, his teammates and the Camp Nou basically refused to let him escape and Mascherano finally smashed in his first Barça goal. It also turned out to be his only goal for the club.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Mascherano Waited 319 Barça Games for His First Goal

By April 2017, scoring had become an inside joke around Javier Mascherano. He had played 319 competitive matches for Barcelona without finding the net (not exactly shocking for a defensive midfielder turned centre-back), but long enough for everyone at the club to notice.

Then Barça were awarded a penalty during a 7-1 win over Osasuna. Ivan Rakitić gave Mascherano the ball and despite Mascherano later admitting that he initially tried to get out of taking it, pressure from his teammates and the crowd won. He stepped up and finally scored in this 2016/17 home design.

And that was it. Mascherano eventually left Barcelona after 334 official appearances and 18 trophies, with exactly one goal to his name, that penalty against Osasuna. So the No. 14 on this shirt belongs to the one season in which Barça’s famously goal-shy “Jefecito” finally got his moment.
