The Season Iniesta Beat Messi and Ronaldo by Two Votes

On 30 August 2012, Iniesta stood against Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award. Fifty-three journalists voted and Iniesta won by the smallest of margins: 19 votes to 17 for each of the other two. For once, in the middle of the Messi-Ronaldo era, someone else had beaten both of them.

Then came another milestone in this exact season. On 29 October 2012, Iniesta celebrated ten years since his Barcelona first-team debut, exactly a decade after an 18-year-old wearing No. 34 had first appeared against Club Brugge in the Champions League. By the time he was wearing this No. 8, he had gone from academy prospect to the player UEFA had just crowned Europe’s best.

He backed it up on the pitch too. Iniesta provided 10 La Liga assists as Barcelona won the title with 100 points, while making 48 competitive appearances across the season. So this No. 8 sits at a pretty perfect point in his career: ten years after his debut, reigning European Player of the Year and still at the heart of another title-winning Barça side.
