The Barça Shirt That Ended 111 Years Without a Paid Sponsor

For generations, one of Barcelona’s proudest quirks was what wasn’t on their shirt. The club went 111 years without accepting money for a front-of-shirt sponsor, even putting UNICEF there from 2006 while Barcelona themselves donated money to the charity. Then this 2011/12 shirt changed everything.

Qatar Foundation appeared across the chest under a sponsorship agreement worth around €30 million per season, becoming the first organisation ever to pay for that famous space. UNICEF didn’t disappear, its logo moved to the lower back, exactly where you can see it on this shirt.

And the No. 6 had an unexpectedly prolific year inside it. Xavi scored 14 competitive goals in 2011/12, comfortably the highest single-season total of his Barcelona career. So this shirt marks two unusual firsts at once: the season Barcelona finally sold the front of their shirt and the season their legendary passer suddenly became more of a goalscorer than ever before.
