Pep Guardiola was promoted to first-team manager in June 2008 after coaching Barça Atlètic. It was his first season managing at the highest level, but by May he had already led Barcelona to La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League: the first treble ever won by a Spanish club.

The squad included Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Samuel Eto’o, Thierry Henry and Carles Puyol, while players such as Sergio Busquets were beginning their first-team careers. Busquets, for example, made his senior Barça debut that season and ended the campaign with 41 appearances.
