This sponsorless training shirt comes from the season Barcelona completely changed the meaning of the logo on a football shirt. In September 2006, Barça agreed to put UNICEF on the front of their match shirts, while paying UNICEF €1.5 million per year rather than receiving sponsorship money. Five days after signing the agreement, the new UNICEF match shirt debuted in a 5–0 Champions League win over Levski Sofia.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Training Shirt From Barça’s First UNICEF Season

One of the biggest changes in Barcelona shirt history happened during the season this training top was used.

On 7 September 2006, FC Barcelona signed an agreement with UNICEF at the United Nations headquarters in New York. For the first time, Barça’s first-team shirt would carry an organisation’s logo prominently on the front. But this was not a normal sponsorship deal: Barcelona committed to donating €1.5 million every year to UNICEF.

Only five days later, Barça played Levski Sofia in the Champions League wearing the UNICEF logo for the first time. They won 5–0 at Camp Nou.

This red Nike top belongs to that same 2006/07 training range, but interestingly keeps a completely clean front: just the Nike Swoosh and Barça crest. The exact red-and-navy design is documented as an official Nike Barcelona training shirt from the campaign.

So while the match shirt from 2006/07 is remembered for the arrival of UNICEF, this training version shows the other side of the same season: simple, sponsorless Nike Barça just as one of the club’s most famous shirt partnerships was beginning.
