David Beckham wore England’s No.7 in this Umbro design at the 1998 World Cup and it was in this shirt that he scored his first international goal. THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt Beckham Scored His First England Goal In

This Umbro design was England’s home shirt from 1997 to 1999, but its defining chapter came at the 1998 World Cup in France. David Beckham travelled to the tournament wearing No.7, still only 23 and yet to score a goal for his country.

After starting England’s first two group matches on the bench, Beckham was selected from the beginning against Colombia, with England needing a result to guarantee progression. Darren Anderton opened the scoring before Beckham stepped up to a free-kick in the 29th minute and curled it beyond Faryd Mondragón for his first England goal.

The night even produced an iconic shirt-related image. After the 2-0 victory, Beckham exchanged shirts with Colombia captain Carlos Valderrama: England’s No.7 left holding the famous yellow No.10, while Valderrama walked away with Beckham’s England shirt.

Just four days later, the same Beckham #7 design became part of a completely different World Cup memory when he was sent off against Argentina after reacting to Diego Simeone. England eventually lost on penalties. That contrast makes this one of the most recognisable Beckham-era England shirts: the design in which he scored his first international goal and, days later, experienced one of the most infamous moments of his early career.
