In 2005, Drogheda United won the FAI Cup for the first time, beating newly crowned league champions Cork City 2-0 in the final. THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Drogheda's First FAI Cup and Number 11

Drogheda United entered the 2005 season under Paul Doolin, who had been improving the squad since taking charge in 2003. The club had moved towards full-time professional football and was beginning to compete with Ireland's strongest teams. One of the players involved was Dutch-born midfielder Jermaine Sandvliet, who wore #11. He scored in the FAI Cup semi-final against Bray Wanderers, helping Drogheda secure a 2-1 victory and reach the final against Cork City. Cork had just won the league title and were favourites to complete the domestic double, but Drogheda had other plans.

On 4 December 2005, Drogheda faced Cork City at Lansdowne Road in front of 24,521 supporters. Sandvliet started the match, with Gavin Whelan opening the scoring in the 52nd minute before captain Declan O'Brien made it 2-0 late on. The win gave Drogheda their first FAI Cup and their first major senior trophy. It also helped start a successful period in which the club won the Setanta Sports Cup in 2006 and 2007, followed by their first league title in 2007. This #11 Jako shirt is a particularly interesting find because of its connection to Sandvliet and the season Drogheda won their first major trophy.
