THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Last Denmark Shirt of Hummel’s First Era

For decades, Denmark and Hummel were almost impossible to separate.

The Danish brand had supplied the national team since 1979, creating some of the country’s most famous football shirts. This white 2003–04 away design came right at the end of that original partnership, shortly before Denmark moved to Adidas in 2004.

It was also part of Denmark’s Euro 2004 collection. Morten Olsen’s side reached the quarter-finals after progressing from a group containing Italy, Sweden and Bulgaria. Their 2–2 draw with Sweden became one of the tournament’s most discussed matches because that exact score sent both Scandinavian teams through and eliminated Italy, although UEFA rejected claims that the result had been arranged.

That gives it a much better story than simply “Denmark in white”: it is one of the final shirts from Hummel’s first historic run with the national team, closing an era that had lasted more than two decades.
