Chicago Fire’s 2018 shirt was built around something almost absurd: 20 years earlier, the club had won both MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup in its very first season of existence. adidas brought back the double white bands from those early shirts and added a special anniversary jock tag specifically to honour the 1998 team. The details on this shirt point straight back to 1998, Chicago Fire’s first ever season. The club had only just joined MLS as an expansion team, yet Bob Bradley’s side immediately beat D.C. United 2-0 to win MLS Cup. Five days later, they beat Columbus Crew in extra time to win the U.S. Open Cup too.

Twenty years later, adidas turned that ridiculous debut season into the design of this shirt. The double white bars deliberately reference the original 1998 kits, while the custom jock tag celebrates the anniversary of that MLS Cup and Open Cup double. Even the stars on the back neck come from Chicago’s city flag, keeping the shirt tied closely to the city rather than just the club.

And the story behind the 1998 team is still wild: Chicago entered a league that had only existed for two seasons and immediately won the biggest domestic league trophy and the national cup.
