Nakamura’s First Celtic Season Before the Free-Kick That Shocked Europe

When Nakamura arrived at Celtic in summer 2005, many Scottish supporters knew him as a talented Japanese international, but few expected how quickly he would become one of the most beloved foreign players in the club’s history. Wearing No. 25, he brought a different style to Celtic Park: left-footed creativity, long-range shooting and a talent for spectacular set pieces.

The 2005/06 season was his first in green and white and it ended with Celtic reclaiming the Scottish Premier League title. Nakamura contributed important goals and assists throughout the campaign, including his first Champions League goal against FC København in a 1-0 victory at Celtic Park.

The following season made him a global Celtic legend. In November 2006, Nakamura scored a stunning 30-yard free-kick against Manchester United in the Champions League, a goal that helped Celtic reach the knockout stages and became one of the most replayed moments in the club’s modern history.
