THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Original Celtic “Bumblebee” Shirt

Celtic shirts are normally built around green and white, so this 1996/97 away design felt almost rebellious.

Umbro replaced the traditional colours with black and fluorescent yellow hoops, creating a shirt supporters quickly nicknamed the “Bumblebee”. The name stuck so strongly that Celtic still officially uses it today when selling retro products inspired by this exact kit.

It also became the starting point for a recurring Celtic idea. Nike revived the Bumblebee look in 2009/10, New Balance produced another version in 2015/16 and Adidas later returned to the same reference. Those later shirts exist because this 1996 Umbro design made the colour combination part of the club’s visual history.

The shirt was worn during a season featuring Paolo Di Canio, Jorge Cadete and Pierre van Hooijdonk. Celtic scored 78 league goals and finished second, five points behind Rangers, so it belongs to an entertaining team even though the campaign ended without the title.

That is the real appeal here: this is not merely a bright 1990s away shirt. It is the original Bumblebee, the design Celtic have kept returning to for nearly three decades.
