THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Before Watkins Became a Striker

This shirt comes from Ollie Watkins’ first year at Brentford, after the club signed him from Exeter City in July 2017 as the reigning EFL Young Player of the Year.

The interesting part is that Watkins was not yet the centre-forward most fans know today. Brentford initially used him from the left, where his speed and direct running made him dangerous before he was later moved permanently through the middle.

He scored his first Brentford goal just three days after his debut, helping beat AFC Wimbledon 3–1 after extra time in the League Cup. By the end of the campaign, he had missed only one league match and recorded 11 goals and five assists across all competitions.

The number 11 therefore belongs to the beginning of his Brentford story, not the finished version. It was the season before he became a full-time striker, before the huge goal totals and before his move to the Premier League.

That is what makes this shirt genuinely cool: it captures Watkins while he was still being figured out. Most people now see an established goalscorer, but this is the number he wore when Brentford first spotted what he could become.
