7UP Made Botafogo's Top Scorer Change His Shirt Number

When 7UP sponsored Botafogo in 1995, the company wanted to do more than put its logo on the shirts. As part of a marketing campaign, star striker Túlio Maravilha switched from number 9 to number 7 and became one of the faces of the brand. It was a clever way to connect the sponsor with Botafogo's biggest goalscorer.

The timing couldn't have been better. Túlio scored 23 goals in the 1995 Brazilian championship, finishing as the league's top scorer. Botafogo reached the final against Santos and won the first leg 2-1 at the Maracanã, with Túlio scoring the winning goal. Four days later, he scored again in a 1-1 draw to secure the title.

It was Botafogo's first Brazilian national championship since 1968. The club had struggled with financial problems, including delayed wages, but still managed to finish the season as champions. The partnership with 7UP became closely linked to that success. The white Finta away shirt, with its big green sponsor and black collar, is a great reminder of a time when a soft drink brand even influenced a striker's shirt number.
