Borussia Dortmund took the “Coal & Steel” concept unusually literally: the 2023 retail shirt was sold in a special presentation box containing an actual piece of coal. The shirt itself carries a black coal-style pattern, while the player printing created for it had a steel effect with a map of Dortmund embedded inside the numbers. BVB then wore the design just once, beating Hertha BSC 4-1 at Signal Iduna Park.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Dortmund Sold This Shirt With an Actual Piece of Coal

This wasn't simply another black Dortmund shirt. BVB created it as a deliberate revival of the hugely popular “Kohle & Stahl” concept first used in 2019, explaining that repeated requests from supporters convinced the club to bring the idea back. For the 2023 release, even the packaging committed to the theme: every shirt was originally sold in a special box containing a piece of coal.

The details went much deeper than the colour. A coal-like texture runs across the black fabric, the crest and sponsor logos were blacked out and the specially designed player names and numbers used a metallic steel effect with a Dortmund city map built into the print. Inside the neck sits “Borussia verbindet” (“Borussia connects”), tying the shirt directly to the city and generations shaped by Dortmund’s coal and steel industries.

BVB wore it only once, at home to Hertha BSC on 19 February 2023 and the shirt's only competitive appearance ended in a 4-1 win. Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring with a back-heel finish before assisting Donyell Malen, Marco Reus curled in a free-kick and Julian Brandt completed the scoring in the 90th minute.
