The Other Home Shirt From Dortmund’s European Miracle

This shirt comes from Borussia Dortmund’s greatest season, but it is not the shirt most people remember from it.

For 1996/97, Dortmund actually had two different yellow home designs. This fluorescent Nike version with thick black sleeve stripes was their regular home shirt, while European matches used a separate design with black vertical stripes and black sleeves.

1996/97 became the season that changed Dortmund’s history. BVB had already won the Bundesliga in 1995 and 1996, but Europe was the next step. Under Ottmar Hitzfeld, they reached the Champions League final in Munich against Juventus, the defending champions and favourites.

Karl-Heinz Riedle scored twice to put Dortmund 2-0 ahead. Alessandro Del Piero pulled one back, before substitute Lars Ricken chipped Angelo Peruzzi for the famous 3-1 goal shortly after coming onto the pitch.

Dortmund had won the biggest trophy in European club football for the first time.

So this shirt has a slightly unusual place in that story: it belongs to Dortmund’s Champions League-winning season, but represents the domestic side of the campaign rather than the famous final itself. That actually makes it easier to overlook and more interesting once you know the difference.
