Nike’s First Barça Season and Xavi’s First Goal

The 1998/99 season marked a major change for Barcelona: Nike became the club’s kit supplier for the first time. What started that year would become one of football’s longest and most recognisable kit partnerships.

It was also the season a teenage Xavi Hernández properly arrived. Louis van Gaal gave the 18-year-old his official debut against Mallorca in August 1998 and Xavi incredibly scored Barcelona’s only goal on his debut. He made his La Liga debut a few weeks later against Valencia.

By the end of the campaign, Barcelona were Spanish champions, while Xavi had taken the first steps in a career that would eventually bring him eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues. This polo sits right at the start of both the Nike-Barça era and Xavi’s first-team story.
