THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

One Shirt, Two Seasons, Two Major Trophies

Most football shirts disappear after one season. Bayern kept this one and it ended up covering two completely different trophy-winning campaigns.

The red-and-blue Adidas design first appeared in 1995/96, when Bayern’s European season became the big story. Their UEFA Cup route included Benfica and Nottingham Forest before a semi-final against Barcelona. After drawing 2-2 in Munich, Bayern went to Camp Nou and won 2-1 to reach the final.

They then beat Bordeaux 2-0 in Munich and 3-1 in France, winning the UEFA Cup 5-1 on aggregate. Jürgen Klinsmann finished the competition with 15 goals, then a record for a single UEFA Cup campaign. The victory also meant Bayern had now won all three major European club trophies then available.

Instead of replacing the home shirt that summer, Adidas carried the same striped design into 1996/97. This time the success came domestically. Giovanni Trapattoni returned as coach and Bayern finished on 71 points, two ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, to become German champions.

The same Bayern home design genuinely survived two seasons, one ending with European silverware and the next with the Bundesliga title.
