Beckenbauer Returned to the Bench and Won Bayern's First League Title in Four Years

Bayern Munich's 1993/94 season wasn't going quite to plan. After several years without a Bundesliga title, the club decided to replace Erich Ribbeck during the winter break. Their solution was Franz Beckenbauer, the legendary former Bayern player who had led West Germany to the 1990 World Cup. He returned to the dugout with one job: bring the Bundesliga title back to Munich.

The championship went down to the final matchday. Bayern hosted Schalke needing to protect their narrow lead over Kaiserslautern. Second-half goals from Lothar Matthäus and Jorginho secured a 2-0 victory, giving Bayern their 12th Bundesliga title by a single point. Beckenbauer had delivered exactly what the club needed.

The following season brought a very different story. Under Giovanni Trapattoni, Bayern finished sixth in the Bundesliga but reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they faced Louis van Gaal's young Ajax side. After a goalless first leg, Ajax won 5-2 in Amsterdam on their way to lifting the trophy.
