The Shirt From Beckenbauer’s Six-Month Title Rescue

The strangest part of this shirt’s story is who ended up coaching Bayern while it was being worn.

Bayern began 1993/94 with Erich Ribbeck as manager, but during the winter break the club made a dramatic change. On 28 December 1993, Franz Beckenbauer (already serving as Bayern vice-president) temporarily left the boardroom and returned to the dugout.

It worked. Beckenbauer stayed in charge for only half a season, but Bayern eventually finished one point ahead of Kaiserslautern and became German champions. The club itself still describes the episode simply: the “Kaiser” stepped in during the winter break and led Bayern to the title.

Adidas then did something less common today and kept this exact home design for 1994/95. Giovanni Trapattoni arrived as the new coach, beginning the first of his two spells in Munich. That season was much harder domestically (Bayern finished sixth) although they reached the Champions League semi-finals before losing to Ajax.

Visually, it is pure early-90s Adidas: instead of simple Bayern stripes, the shirt uses huge diagonal blue-and-white blocks cutting across the red body.

This one design covered Beckenbauer’s surprise return as coach, a Bundesliga title and the beginning of the Trapattoni era.
