The Shirt Made for the Calderón’s Final Season

Atlético Madrid did not treat the 2016/17 home shirt as a normal seasonal update.

The Vicente Calderón had opened on 2 October 1966 and this shirt was released exactly 50 years later as a tribute to the club’s old home. Nike used three broad red stripes inspired by Atlético’s 1966/67 shirt, the first design worn during a full season at the new stadium. A commemorative Calderón detail was also placed inside the collar.

That historical reference became even more meaningful because 2016/17 was Atlético’s final season at the Calderón before moving to the Metropolitano. The club played its last official first-team match there against Athletic Club in May 2017, closing a 50-year chapter in the same season this anniversary shirt was worn.

It was also a serious final campaign rather than a quiet farewell. Atlético finished third in La Liga and reached the semi-finals of both the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

So the strongest story is built directly into the shirt: its stripes look back to the Calderón’s opening season, while the shirt itself belongs to the stadium’s last one. For an Atlético collector, it is basically the beginning and end of the Calderón era brought together in one design.
