This shirt comes from KIA’s final season on Atlético gear, ending a sponsorship that had started back in 2005. The timing was pretty good: 2010/11 opened with Atlético’s first-ever UEFA Super Cup, a 2–0 win over Champions League holders Inter in which Reyes and Agüero scored and 19-year-old David de Gea saved a late penalty.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Last KIA Training Shirt and Atlético’s First Super Cup

The KIA logo is actually the clue that dates this shirt. The Korean car company had been Atlético’s main sponsor since 2005, but announced that the partnership would finish at the end of 2010/11. That makes this blue Nike training top part of the final Atlético collection to carry the familiar KIA oval on the front.

The season itself began with one of the club’s biggest European results of that era.

Atlético had won the newly renamed Europa League a few months earlier, earning a UEFA Super Cup meeting with Champions League winners Inter Milan on 27 August 2010. It was Atlético’s first appearance in the competition. They won 2–0.

José Antonio Reyes opened the scoring before Sergio Agüero added the second. Then, with Inter given a late penalty, teenage goalkeeper David de Gea saved Diego Milito’s kick to preserve the clean sheet. Atlético had entered their first Super Cup and immediately won it.

This long-sleeve Nike training shirt belongs to that exact campaign, with KIA on the front and Kyocera branding from Atlético’s old sponsorship setup.

It ended up marking two endings as well: KIA’s last year on the shirt and Agüero’s final season in Madrid.
