The Shirt Behind Kallithea’s Forgotten “England” Nickname

Athens Kallithea’s modern image feels very current, but this away shirt is built around a story from the club’s first years.

After Kallithea were founded in 1966, the team played in white shirts with navy shorts. Supporters thought the combination looked like England’s national kit, and the club picked up the nickname “England.” Decades later, Kappa used that old identity as the basis for this white-and-navy away shirt.

The chest sponsor adds another layer. Instead of a betting company or airline, the shirt carries EMΣT, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens. The club describes it as a first-of-its-kind partnership between the two institutions, placing a major cultural name directly onto the football shirt.

Athens Kallithea also kept the design for two seasons rather than replacing it after one year, which is why the official store dates it 2024–26.

That gives the short-sleeve version a genuinely good story: an old supporter nickname, a link to the club’s founding years and one of football’s most unusual sponsors, all in a shirt that still works perfectly as everyday wear.
