Savo Milošević was supposed to be Aston Villa’s new superstar. He arrived from Partizan for a club-record £3.5 million, but his first season quickly became difficult enough for the English tabloids to nickname him “Miss-a-lot-ević” after a string of missed chances and scoring droughts.

Then came Wembley. In the 1996 League Cup Final against Leeds, Milošević collected the ball well outside the penalty area and suddenly launched a spectacular long-range strike over John Lukic. Villa never looked back: Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke added two more as they won 3-0 and lifted the League Cup.

That moment completely changed the story attached to this Reebok shirt. A striker being mocked for missing chances produced one of the competition’s most memorable final goals when it mattered most and Villa ended the day with their fifth League Cup, equalling the competition record at the time.
