This 125th-anniversary shirt became part of one of the neatest comebacks in Arsenal history. On 9 December 2011, a statue of Thierry Henry was unveiled outside the Emirates; exactly one month later, on 9 January 2012, he pulled on Arsenal colours again and came off the bench against Leeds wearing the unfamiliar No.12. Ten minutes after entering the pitch, Henry collected Alex Song’s pass and produced the same trademark finish Arsenal fans had watched for years, scoring the only goal of the FA Cup tie.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

From Statue to Scorer, Exactly One Month Later

Arsenal created this shirt for their 125th anniversary, replacing the normal crest with a special 1886–2011 version surrounded by laurel and oak leaves and carrying the old motto “Forward.” It was already a shirt built around the club’s history before Thierry Henry unexpectedly added another chapter to it.

On 9 December 2011, Henry returned to the Emirates for the unveiling of his own bronze statue as part of the anniversary celebrations. Barely four weeks later, Arsenal brought the 34-year-old back as a player on a short loan from New York Red Bulls. His old No.14 was now Theo Walcott’s, so one of the most famous No.14s in football returned wearing 12.

His second debut came against Leeds in the FA Cup on 9 January 2012, exactly one month after the statue unveiling. Henry entered in the 68th minute with the game still 0-0. Ten minutes later Alex Song slipped him through on the left, Henry opened his body and rolled the ball across Andy Lonergan into the far corner: essentially the classic Henry finish, recreated five years after he had left Arsenal.

The goal was his 227th for Arsenal and he later added another dramatic winner at Sunderland before returning to New York.
