Arsenal wore this yellow Nike away shirt in one of the defining matches of the Invincibles season: the infamous Battle of Old Trafford in September 2003. With Patrick Vieira sent off and the match still 0-0, Ruud van Nistelrooy was given a stoppage-time penalty that could have ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run almost before it had begun, but he smashed it against the crossbar. Thierry Henry started in No.14 and Arsenal escaped Old Trafford without defeat before going on to complete the entire Premier League season unbeaten.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Penalty Miss That Kept the Invincibles Alive

This yellow-and-blue Nike shirt was Arsenal’s away kit for 2003/04, the season that produced the Invincibles. Thierry Henry wore No.14 at the centre of that side, but one of the most important moments in the unbeaten run was not a Henry goal, it was a penalty that never went in.

On 21 September 2003, Arsenal travelled to Old Trafford wearing this away design. The match became increasingly hostile and captain Patrick Vieira was sent off late after an incident with Ruud van Nistelrooy. Henry started alongside Dennis Bergkamp as ten-man Arsenal tried to protect a 0-0 draw.

Then Manchester United were awarded a penalty in stoppage time. Van Nistelrooy stepped up with the chance to win the match and send Arsenal to their first league defeat of the campaign, only to crash his shot against the bar. The final whistle brought the famous scenes of Martin Keown and several Arsenal players confronting the striker as they celebrated the escape.

What looked like one chaotic September draw became far more significant months later. Arsenal never lost a Premier League game all season, so Van Nistelrooy’s miss became one of the moments on which the Invincibles story turned. The yellow shirt was later retained as Arsenal’s third kit for 2004/05, but its identity was already secured by that unbeaten 2003/04 campaign.
