This was Robin van Persie’s first Arsenal shirt with number 10 after spending the previous season in #11. The strange part is who he inherited it from: centre-back William Gallas, who had worn Arsenal’s 10 for four seasons after Dennis Bergkamp retired. Arsène Wenger had deliberately given it to a defender because he feared an attacking player would face too much comparison with Bergkamp.

Van Persie Took Arsenal’s No. 10 From a Centre-Back

In July 2010, Van Persie finally became Arsenal’s number 10. He switched from #11 after William Gallas left the club, officially following in the footsteps of fellow Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp.

But the number had taken a very unusual route between the two Dutch forwards. After Bergkamp retired in 2006, Wenger gave #10 to defender William Gallas, explaining that he wanted to protect an attacking player from the inevitable comparisons with Bergkamp. Gallas kept it until 2010.

So this 2010/11 away shirt represents Van Persie’s first season wearing the number that would become inseparable from his peak Arsenal years. Nike also designed the yellow away strip as part of a retro-inspired set recalling Arsenal’s 1971 Double-winning era, giving his new number an appropriately old-school backdrop.
