The Stripes Sparta Brought Back After 100 Years

For most supporters, Sparta Prague means a dark claret home shirt. That is why this 2006/07 away design has a much better story than a standard change kit.

According to Sparta’s own historical shirt archive, the club returned to red-and-white stripes in 2006 for the first time in exactly 100 years. It was a deliberate link to the striped shirts Sparta had used near the beginning of the twentieth century, rather than simply another Nike template chosen for one season. 

The timing made the comeback even better. Sparta won the 2006/07 Czech league, finishing ahead of city rivals Slavia Prague and returning to the Champions League qualification places. The squad included Tomáš Řepka, Libor Došek, Miroslav Matušovič and a young Daniel Kolář, with Došek scoring 12 league goals. 

This sponsorless example also looks cleaner than the more commonly documented Fortuna version. Its real appeal, though, is the history behind the stripes: Sparta revived a century-old identity and immediately finished the season as champions. That is the kind of detail that makes the shirt feel intentional rather than simply retro-looking.
